The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) presented a 10-year plan for developing an interoperable health IT ecosystem to achieve the “triple aim” of improving population health, providing better quality care and lowering per-capita costs.
The ONC published an Interoperability Vision Paper called “Connecting Health and Care for the Nation: A 10-Year Vision to Achieve an Interoperable Health IT Infrastructure,” which outlines goals for three, six and 10 years down the road.
To realize these goals, the ONC has identified five major building blocks for achieving interoperable infrastructure. The ONC has pledged to collaborate with federal, state, tribal, local and private sector stakeholders to align efforts and develop shared priorities.
The five building blocks of the nationwide interoperability roadmap are:
- Core technical standards and functions
- Certification to support adoption and optimization of health IT products and services
- Privacy and security protections for health information
- Supportive business, clinical, cultural, and regulatory environments
- Rules of engagement and governance
The ONC is soliciting public input on the first version of the roadmap by Friday, September 12, 2014. The ONC will then synthesize the feedback and post a revised version of the roadmap in early 2015.
