New Federal Health IT Strategic Plan Allows for Enhanced Data Sharing

Federal-healthIT-strategic-plan-2014_report_coverThe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has issued the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan for 2015-2020. The Strategic Plan represents collaborations between 35 federal agencies to appropriately collect, share and use interoperable health information for the enhancement of health care, individual, community and public health as well as advancing research.

“The 2015 Strategic Plan provides the federal government a strategy to move beyond health care to improve health, use health IT beyond EHRs, and use policy and incentive levers beyond the incentive program. The success of this plan is also dependent upon insights from public and private stakeholders and we encourage their comments.”

–     Karen DeSalvo, M.D., national coordinator for health IT and acting assistant secretary for health

As a multi-agency collaborative working towards improved interoperability across diverse systems and boundaries, the Illinois Framework for Healthcare and Human Services can engage the Federal Strategic Plan as a guide for developing specific goals and strategies to leverage interoperability and achieve the triple aim of: (1) improving population health, (2) providing better quality care and (3) lowering per-capita costs.

The Federal Health IT Strategic Plan 2015-2020 will be open for public comment until February 6, 2015.
