Commonwealth Fund Report Finds that Coordinating Mechanisms, Shared Data are Key to Integrating Services

A recent Issue Brief from The Commonwealth Fund noted that states working to integrate health care, public health and social services must establish a coordinating mechanism – such as an interagency agreement and an office dedicated to integration – as well as interoperable IT systems to facilitate cross-agency data sharing.  The findings were based on interviews with numerous state officials and policy experts.

In Illinois, the Framework serves as a crucial coordinating mechanism for integration.  The Framework established an Executive Steering Committee to foster collaboration among decision makers, and provides staff dedicated to strategic planning and technological improvements.

The Illinois Framework is also working to establish interoperable systems capable of sharing and aggregating data across numerous programs to enable the state to track population health metrics, assess consumer outcomes, and improve the quality and coordination of public services.
